Today, 3 December, international day of people with disabilities. In this day there are activities that help integrate people with disabilities into society. On the streets of Ukrainian cities, as it seems, the disabled not so much. But it’s not because in the country a small number of people with disabilities, but because the conditions for their comfort and quality of life, to put it mildly, leave much to be desired. Therefore, it is important not to forget that “special” people need our help, support and attention every day instead of once a year.
Social vulnerability of people with disabilities
At the moment, in Ukraine about 3 million people with disabilities: 80% of disabled people are of working age. Military operations in the East of the country contribute to the growth of disability: a ATU soldiers return home injured and in need of rehabilitation and psychological assistance.
Despite the fact that Ukraine ratified the UN Convention “On the rights and freedoms of the individual in relation to people with disabilities” equal rights to employment, availability of infrastructure and education for people with disabilities is ensured only formally. Disabled – the most isolated population group in society. Therefore, the “special” people need our help to successfully overcome the psychological, physical, and information barriers.
How to deal with those who have disabilities
Native and non-native people are often in their desire to help to show excessive care. Their excessive care, unwittingly, they constantly remind the disabled person that he is not like everyone else. It is important to remember that care should be measured. And Vice versa – excessive indifference or offensive tone against the disabled is unacceptable. When communicating with a person in a wheelchair, try to converse with him, being on the same level. You can sit down or bend over to carry on a conversation face to face and not towering over the man.
Don’t be afraid to offer people with disabilities help on the street. If he refuses to help, then don’t insist. Many of the “special” people – invalids from childhood and can take care of myself. Offer help only if you are sure that you will cope. If you realize that you are not able to raise the wheelchair to keep the person who enters or exits the transport, etc., ask them to help others.
Why is it important to provide psychological rehabilitation
If the disability received by a person in adulthood, then he will need more assistance for rehabilitation and later life. Injury resulting in a disability, bring in a person’s life many limitations. Especially hard to accept the disability and adapt to it people whose profession was related to active physical activity. In many cases one loved ones or support the power of the spirit is not enough: the deterioration of the psychological state necessary to consult specialists.
The person who has acquired a disability recently, it is very important to understand that he is not alone and receive psychological support. Despite the difficulties with the rehabilitation of invalids in Ukraine, the activities of some public organizations and societies in this direction is quite successful. For example, all-Ukrainian public organization “active rehabilitation Group” provides physical and psychological assistance to wheelchair users. People who received disability recently, teach to cope with difficulties and to live without the help of outsiders.
A positive result, according to the head of the organization Vladimir Azin, noticeable within a week. The “special” people are completely changing the perception of themselves, they realize that they are not alone with their problems and you can be successful and live a quality life, even moving in a wheelchair. A great example of the Ukrainian Paralympians.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help
That person with disabilities especially need psychological help “tell” the following symptoms:
– prolonged depression, which the man himself can not overcome
constant watery eyes
– feelings of hopelessness
– the constant aggression on others
– fatigue and frequent illnesses.
In Ukraine, assistance to disabled persons is engaged in a number of organisations-the state centers of social services, charities, Ukrainian organization of disabled persons, society of disabled veterans, volunteer organizations, etc. in addition, volunteer organizations and private service organize transportation of people with disabilities that allows for “special” people to travel and/or to rehabilitation in different countries.
